Kelsey Plum

Hey hey! Wow, Phoenix actually pulled this off. The Mercury landed five-time All-Star Kelsey Plum, but is the trade too little too late? Plus exciting storylines to follow: WPBL's first-ever games, a streaming platform getting fired by the NWSL, and more. Let's get into it.

⚾ WPBL
Women's pro baseball is back after 70 years
WPBL Opening Day, Maybelle Blair first pitch

The Women's Pro Baseball League played its first-ever game on August 1, the first U.S. women's pro baseball league since the one that inspired "A League of Their Own." A sold-out crowd braved rain and wind in Springfield, Illinois to watch the Los Angeles Queens rally from an early 7-2 hole to beat the New York Heights 10-8.

The best moment was off the field: 99-year-old Maybelle Blair, who played in that original 1940s league, threw the first pitch to San Francisco Firebells captain Kelsie Whitmore. All 30 games this inaugural season will be played at one neutral ballpark. NBC News

Trade deadline shakeup
Aneesah Morrow

The Los Angeles Sparks traded five-time All-Star Kelsey Plum to the Phoenix Mercury early Sunday, just the fourth time in league history an All-Star has been dealt midseason. Plum was averaging a career-high 23.9 points before injury, giving the Mercury real firepower next to Alyssa Thomas and Kahleah Copper, while the picks LA got back signal a full commitment to a rebuild. Another deal to know: the Connecticut Sun sent former LSU star Aneesah Morrow to the expansion Toronto Tempo. Toronto lands a young double-double machine (11.6 points, 8.9 rebounds a game) without giving up a first-round pick, while the Sun stack future assets ahead of their move to Houston. Toronto Tempo

Lacrosse crowns its first champion
WLL Championship

The Women's Lacrosse League holds its inaugural Championship on Saturday, August 15 at Subaru Park near Philadelphia, capping the four-team league's first full season. The Philly area is a real lacrosse hotbed: 18 players across the league's rosters have ties to the region.

The playoffs will set the final matchup between the Boston Guard, California Palms, Maryland Charm, and New York Charging. First pitch is 5 PM ET, live on ESPN. ESPN

⚽ NWSL
A new streaming home and an earlier 2027
NWSL

The NWSL cut ties with streamer Victory+ this week and is moving every affected match to its own platform, NWSL+, at no cost to fans and with no disruption to the schedule. Its deals with CBS, ESPN, Prime, and ION are unchanged.

The league is also planning its earliest start ever, kicking off 2027 in February to work around the summer's Women's World Cup in Brazil. And it committed to keeping its spring-to-fall calendar through 2030 rather than flipping to a European-style schedule. Just Women's Sports
